The ties between France and Cuenca, Ecuador, are ancient. They date back to 1736 with the arrival of the French Geodesic Mission tasked with measuring the Earth’s longitude. Additionally, in the following years, the city hosted several of its members for various years, including the anthropologist Paul Rivet. In the 1960s, a group of enthusiasts of French culture, led by Dr. Juan Cueva, founded the Alliance Française de Cuenca, an institution of great prominence in the city, which in 2007 established the ESCUELA FRANCESA DE CUENCA (EFC), graduating its first class in July 2019.
Currently, the ESCUELA FRANCESA DE CUENCA administers the Binational French Private Educational Units (UEPBF) Joseph de Jussieu and Louis Godin, which offer basic education and high school, respectively, with recognition from the French Ministry of Education and support from CNED.
Its new brand identity was created in 2022 and modernly, minimalist, and playfully reinterprets one of the icons of French culture, the rooster: a symbol of its Gallic origins and a representation of faith and light, thus reflecting the institution’s educational philosophy.
